A soldier would never go into battle without a clear plan of where the targets are, yet all too often, people sometimes do not even know how much money they are bringing in or spending throughout the year.

A budget doesn’t have to be a plan that forces you to take away stuff that you enjoy or like. When you create a budget, it should be a guide, not a constraint. A reasonable budget allows you to do things you like and save money at the same time.  Of course if you are $100,000 in credit card debt, it is rather difficult to do save money and pay the bills at the same time, in fact, paying off any credit card debt should be your #1 goal and the best investment you can ever make.

Creating a budget doesn’t have to be a complicated, in the beginning, it’s best to keep things simple. The key is to determine how much you’ll spend and earn in any given year.

Learning to live within your means is a simple matter of spending less than you make.  For most people, that means cutting back.  There are dozens of things you can cut down without annihilating your life style.

  • If you’re paying multiple credit cards, consider paying off the smaller to largest, and cut them off for good.
  • Still have an adjustable-rate mortgage? Now is the best time to refinance in the history.
  • Use genetics instead of name-brand for food and prescriptions.
  • Try increasing deductibles in your home and auto insurance.
  • Call and negotiate with your cable TV, Internet service and local and long-distance phone plans.
  • It’s equally important to pay your bills on time. Not only will you avoid late fees, but you’ll keep your credit score clean, which rewards you with the best possible rates on future loans.

And above all else, stop trying to keep up with the Joneses. Your neighbors with the latest clothes and luxury cars may be drowning in debt, and while you may not sport a designer watch, you will be able to sleep at night.

Bottom Line: Being in control of your finances not only saves you money, but it also makes you a more financially secure person and family.
